<br /></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I really want to thank Shelly Terrel and her <a href="http://teacherrebootcamp.com/30goals/30goals2014/" target="_blank">30 Goals for Educators</a> for all the chances she gives us to spread the word about the activities and lessons we do in class.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This time I want to share a lesson I did in October 2015 with my 6th graders and my dear sister-in-the-heart and colleague Ayat Tawel.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">All this started when I was told that my 6th graders were going to work with the book "Atrapada en Dubai" by Susana Trespi during the "Reading Marathon Week", I had no doubt about it was going to be a great week for the English Class, too.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The story is about a woman who married a Muslim man and all she suffered when living in Dubai. The purpose of this post is not to tell about the novel but about what we did with the story and the book.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I worked with CLIL as I prepared material related to Geography (Muslim and Occidental Countries), Religion (Islam (the Koran) and Catholicism (the Bible), Social Studies (clothes, food, languages, customs) and Spanish Language (elements of an interview).</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The Spanish Language teacher started reading the book to the kids in their class period and I started working with some topics in English. They also worked with some customs and traditions in Occidental countries, esp. Argentina and as I had visited Egypt and knew about Muslim customs, I started working with them in English and Spanish as well. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In relation to Geography, students had to find out about Muslim Countries, esp. Dubai; they worked with Google Maps, Google Earth and other websites where they visited Dubai "virtually". With Religion, students worked with the Bible and the Koran so as to read about both religions and how they influence our lives.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />What students found different and strange was how women are dressed as they wear veils, nekabs and abayas most of the time. In fact, the treatment of women is what interested them a lot.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Two of the best parts of working with this project / lesson were when they author and the editor came to class and talked to the students about the whole process of writing and editing the book. And when students interviewed Ayat via Skype as they were working with "interview elements" in Spanish and English.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As closing activity, students created a "play" using all the had learned during the project.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I want to thank Susana Trespi for allowing me use her book and translate part of it into English; to Ayat for helping my students know more about Islam and Egypt; to the "Remedios Escalada de San Martin School" principals for believing in my crazy ideas and of course, to my students who were opened to work with this project.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="http://photopeach.com/album/rfl6s3" target="_blank">See the pics of the whole project here</a> </span></div>

<i><u>How to meet your new students!</u></i></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Some days ago, our teacher guru, Shelly Terrel shared with us a new challenge at <a href="http://www.30goals.com/" target="_blank">the 30 Goals Challenge for Teachers</a>... "Go on a selfie adventure". When I read about it, I thought it was a great idea to meet my new students next year.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">However, I had a wonderful piece of news at school that same week... I had a new course. The new course is a 6th year at secondary school so I immediately remember the selfie adventure... that was the best way to know my new students! Why wait until 2016 to put it into practice if I could do it now?</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I created my own selfie-adventure (though mine was not with selfies and you can see it <a href="http://es.slideshare.net/Pescada/marias-selfie-adventure" target="_blank">here</a>) and I also shared <a href="http://es.slideshare.net/ShellTerrell/back-to-school-selfie-adventure-activity-for-students" target="_blank">Shelly's adventure</a> in our class Facebook group so students could see what they had to do.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Students liked the idea and I told them I would give them a mark for the "adventure". The objective is not to give a mark for the pictures but for the comments they can write in English.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">From the moment I told them the idea until the deadline day, I received all the "selfie-adventures" via mail and private messages in my Facebook account. I watched each of the PPTs so I could check mistakes and of course, have fun with the pictures.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I had a fantastic time because I learnt not only about my students but also about new apps which I had never heard before.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In case you want to see the productions, you can see them all <a href="http://padlet.com/mariabossa/selfies6to4ta2015" target="_blank">here</a> and you can also leave a message if you feel like!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<i><u>To be or not to be silent in class? - Reflections after Ayat Tawel's Presentation</u></i></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This post is a reflection about Ayat Tawel's presentation at <a href="http://learning2gether.net/" target="_blank">Learning2gether</a> about "The Silent Way" method/approach and two goals from <a href="http://shellyterrell.com/30goals/30goals2014/" target="_blank">The 30 Goals Challenge for Teachers - Cycle 5 - 2014</a> "#8:Share an activity" and #29:Grow through reflection".</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Before you read my post, you can both read <a href="http://ayat-pdiary.blogspot.com.ar/2014/11/the-silent-way.html?showComment=1429385758963" target="_blank">Ayat's blog about The Silent Way</a> and/or listen <a href="https://sas.elluminate.com/site/external/jwsdetect/nativeplayback.jnlp?sid=75&psid=2015-04-19.0706.M.7AE801FFB697DA460D4BF25AA8C21B.vcr" target="_blank">to her presentation at Learning2gether</a>.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;">First of all, let me tell you I was so happy to attend my dear friend, colleague and twin-sister-in-the-heart Ayat Tawel's presentation/webinar at Learning2gether, hosted by Vance Steven.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><br style="line-height: 1.22em;" /></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;">Ayat was extremely brilliant at presenting how she worked and dealt with "The Silent Way" in her classes. After her presentation, I was thinking of how I could use it in my large classes (36 students in each class) and I came out with some ideas which were put into practice today.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><br style="line-height: 1.22em;" /></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;">Apart from this, I was thinking that "TSW" (The Silent Way from now on here) reminds a bit of </span><span style="line-height: 1.22em;">Ferdinand de Saussure's dichotomy - I would say, it might have had its roots there.</span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Saussure wrote about the Paradigmatic and Sintagmatic Relations. The idea is that the relations are not only vertically but also horizontally.</span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;">Let me exemplify:</span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b style="line-height: 1.22em;">The</b> <span style="line-height: 1.22em;">cat</span> <b style="line-height: 1.22em;">is big</b></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> <span style="line-height: 1.22em;">dog</span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> <span style="line-height: 1.22em;"> frog</span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The black words are in sintagmatic relation with the words in purple. On the other hand, all the other words are the paradigmatic ones since if we exchange them, we have the "paradigm". </span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br style="line-height: 1.22em;" /></span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">What I learnt from Ayat is that if we use the Cuisennaire Rods (or any other similar supply) we can learn new structures, esp. if we are kinesthetic and visual learners.</span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Though Ayat exemplified "TSW" with the verb "have got", I was thinking that we can use it with other structures, verb tenses and even with connectors / linkers.</span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br style="line-height: 1.22em;" /></span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Once the students have lots of practice, as Ayat suggested, they would be ready for the written part. They would have the incorporated structure and later they would write it automatically without mistakes.</span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br style="line-height: 1.22em;" /></span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Ayat also talked about large classes... I don't think that implementing this method/approach would be inconvenient because teachers can divide the class into small groups and they can work independently. I know that Cuisennaire Rods might me expensive, but, students can use color pencils, or cardboard paper instead. So the teacher can walk around the class and observe them "in silent".</span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br style="line-height: 1.22em;" /></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Last but not least, another attendee asked about "confusion with color when teaching new topics". My reply comment was that teachers can skip one or two topics and go back to "TSW". It is not necessary and compulsory to use the same method/approach all the time so you can include the three type of learners: visual, auditive and kinesthetic ones.</span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.8599996566772px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="line-height: 1.22em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br style="line-height: 1.22em;" /></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 19.5200004577637px;">This morning, I decided to use "TSW" in one of my classes. I have 36 14-year-old students whose English level is pre-intermediate. The task was to create a poster to advertise any product they wanted. First of all, I told them to take 3 color pens: Blue, Red and Black (because they are the most common ones in the pencil cases). I started saying sentences and showing one color pen with each part of a sentence. After that, they had to do it. My students immediately inferred the rule and started saying sentences in English. As the task was a bit complicated to do it all in English due to new vocabulary, I allowed my students to write sentences in Spanish following the same pattern: Blue (doer of the action), Red (action), Black (rest of information). They did wonderfully! When they were done with the Spanish version (as Ayat suggested), they translated into English using the Blue/Red/Black pattern. I was astonished to see the results because for the 1st time they were able to produce complete sentences in English (in Spanish we can skip the subject).</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Momevemt... mmm... movement is not only considered as a way of "movement" but also it is considered as an "organization"... a group of people doing things together and this is what I'm going to write about... My movement... <a href="https://www.rotary.org/" target="_blank">Rotary International</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Rotary International was founded on February 23rd, 1905 by Paul Harris. Yes, 110 years ago today!!! And since then, it has spread all over the world with more that 34,000 clubs and over 1,2 million members in about 150 countries.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I support the "Rotarian Movement" because the main objective is "Service above Self". I like helping others, I feel that I have a purpose in life, other than being a teacher!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB9t8DruWhXfSIj8hCpnzkTgWH67-m5KyfLjeG869f6u9Vy59ku-8VnxAs44Zm3e-JqV1LETR1tn-Je3sE2ImLN_UObway0b8VpSto_NSyq_agTkeildLC4c41yKBmieuqcZCgN3RswHTv/s1600/rotary-club-international.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB9t8DruWhXfSIj8hCpnzkTgWH67-m5KyfLjeG869f6u9Vy59ku-8VnxAs44Zm3e-JqV1LETR1tn-Je3sE2ImLN_UObway0b8VpSto_NSyq_agTkeildLC4c41yKBmieuqcZCgN3RswHTv/s1600/rotary-club-international.gif" height="264" width="320" /></a> </div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Apart from "service", Rotary is a way of life where friendship, leadership, diversity and ethics are the pillars in all Rotarians' lives.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I became the 1st woman to enter the Rotary Club in my city in 2012 - the club had been an "only-men club" since it was chartered in 1957. From the moment I became a Rotarian, I have been participating actively in lots of activities not only in my hometown in Argentina but also in other countries. I have attended physical and online meetings and have created the <a href="https://www.rotary.org/myrotary/en/exchange-ideas/groups/rotarian-educators" target="_blank">Rotarian Educators</a> forum within RI Website.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Rotary International has opened the doors to my professional life as I have had the chance to meet teachers of English from remote countries and learn from them. Rotary International has given me friends with whom I share the same values, the same objectives and the same ideals. Rotary International has also jazzed up my whole being with energy and positivism.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><i><u>KEY... Keep Educating Yourself</u></i></span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">When I was invited by Shelly Sanchez Terrell to participate in the <a href="http://30goals.com/" target="_blank">The 30 Goals Challenge for Educators</a> I thought about the tittle "Learn with Passion" but not from the students' point of view but... from the teachers' point of view. Why? Because we always think about students and never about us! We tend to attend courses, seminars, webinars and congresses to learn about stuff for them...</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFL4l_jmYP6tFqkg1TFwq_uOwzsTpaXZ__QX5ORHk_KRk-UmA53ggnD_pjByi2GgUecTvOVPvHbBk1JvfS9Blb1XWVx0CdE2vrloSnZZ76-34_FUG-Ddm4xt13eDp909ZFHPdCizRlMC0H/s1600/images.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFL4l_jmYP6tFqkg1TFwq_uOwzsTpaXZ__QX5ORHk_KRk-UmA53ggnD_pjByi2GgUecTvOVPvHbBk1JvfS9Blb1XWVx0CdE2vrloSnZZ76-34_FUG-Ddm4xt13eDp909ZFHPdCizRlMC0H/s1600/images.jpg" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">With the availability of new technologies, with thousands of resources inside the Internet, we teachers don't know where to start and how to start to look for material, support and other colleagues with the same problems. So I decided to write about the most 2 influential Personal Learning Networks I belong to and the ones I "refuel" from every day.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The first one and my "guiding star" is the </span><a href="http://webheadsinaction.org/" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" target="_blank">The Webheads in Action</a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">. With them, I have learnt most of the stuff I know about blogs, digital storytelling, e-books, wikis, social networks and tons of other things I had never ever imagined they existed. I found them almost 5 years ago and from that moment onward, I have never left them behind. The Webheads are like "ants"... they are everywhere!! And as they are everywhere, I have met wonderful educators from around the world... Egypt, Morocco, Portugal, Croatia, Brazil, Slovenia, Russia just to name a few. It's incredible how people with a different culture and different customs become part of your life. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6AiFBGh2Cw-FCn5d2e1UUDNQgk18_efKWR3jKVYe4Gjapnsa5DtRkQ4g3FMqcJpCdlmwLiE2QJCzIG_LD1_eh8o_Cgu3pkWr1CQMyAVIpNsaHHgls2VykidLd6Vzm-iFx6F4YDcLNR9fH/s1600/03c6008b30ab0f142c68dfe607be88e9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6AiFBGh2Cw-FCn5d2e1UUDNQgk18_efKWR3jKVYe4Gjapnsa5DtRkQ4g3FMqcJpCdlmwLiE2QJCzIG_LD1_eh8o_Cgu3pkWr1CQMyAVIpNsaHHgls2VykidLd6Vzm-iFx6F4YDcLNR9fH/s1600/03c6008b30ab0f142c68dfe607be88e9.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The second must-site is <a href="http://community.simplek12.com/scripts/student/home.asp?initial=1#cat0" target="_blank">Simple K12</a>. This is a "wow" place you should - or better - have to visit!! I had come across it some time ago but I had never paid too much attention until last October 2013 when I became a full member and "OMG..." tons of resources and webinars have been at my complete disposal. Whatever you can imagine is there... forum discussions with almost 450.000 educators, videos, links, ebooks... and the best... the blue bunnies!! Simple K12 is a Teacher Learning Community you will enjoy stop by and I'm sure you won't regret having spent one minute there.</span></div>
<div>
<br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">"Lean with Passion" is one of the best activities you can do while you are on holidays, while you are working, while you are in bed... "keep educating yourself" because it's the only way you have to go with the flow, with the new technology and with the "new" students. We teachers know that if we fall asleep, our "kids" get bored, feel frustrated and don't learn!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Take 10 minutes of your time, "Learn with Passion" and ... think that the only thing you can do is to ...</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><i><u>Let's make our classes more DISNEY like :)</u></i></span></span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">When it's time to study, sometimes, it's boring time but today... it was creative time, at least for me!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As part of the online course I'm taking at the University of Oregon, "TESOL Methods", I had to discuss Bloom's Taxonomy. Within the discussion thread, one of my colleagues Mrs. Nunene from Nairobi told us about the WALT and WILF acronyms. WALT is "we are learning to" and WILF is "what I'm looking for".</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">When I read the post, I thought of adding the picture of Walt Disney so as to make it funnier. However, after reflecting on that, I came to the conclusion that having his picture was going to be boring. So... what happened? Another acronym came to my mind... DISNEY!!!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">What is DISNEY? It's something we - teachers - should do in class!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: blue; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Discipline </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We all want our students to keep quiet and calm. They can move around, play, sing, among others, but, keeping discipline.</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.3; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">One month ago, after participating at RSCON4 (Reform Symposium Conference), I was selected as one of the 5 Ed Teachers Inspire and I won this wonderful prize: Having a full membership to this Teacher Learning Community. </span><div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I was a member already, but with a limited access and I really didn't pay a lot of attention to it. Once I became full member, I log in very day and I participate in forums, in webinars and in sharing resources a lot! I can say that I've become "addicted" to it.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I've met wonderful teachers and have interacted with lots of presenters not only in the webinars I've been attending but also in Twitter (<a href="https://twitter.com/SimpleK12" target="_blank">SimpleK12 in Twitter</a>). All of them have been very kind and helpful.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Now, after this month, I applied to become an Ambassador and to my surprise... I've become one! I've been promoting the community among my colleagues and at school. Now, it's time to promote it everywhere I go, esp. all the conferences and congresses I attend. Unfortunately, we start our summer holidays in Argentina, but I'm sure, I'll be able to start doing it next February when we go back to school.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">There are tons of resources, tons of webinars, tons of lessons, tons of forums... tons of everything! And of course, tons of awesome educators! </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><i><u>Why are puppets useful in the EFL classroom?</u></i></span></span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Some time ago, I started using puppets in the classroom. Some of them were simple socks and some others were more sophisticated as I bought them. However, after seeing that my students thought puppets were silly, I put them aside.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This year I met (virtually speaking) Juan Alberto Lopez Uribe who showed me how important puppets are in the classroom. He shared some wonderful videos and interesting blog posts so I decided to bring puppets back to my class.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="http://childrenlearningenglishaffectively.blogspot.ca/search/label/Puppets" target="_blank">Juan's blog about puppets</a></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Also, when I participated at RSCON4, I listened to Sam Pattersen who also works with puppets. He showed funny puppets in action and some days ago, I listened to him again in another webinar by "Classroom 2.0" talking about... puppets!!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="http://patue.teachercast.net/patue-homepage/" target="_blank">Sam's site about puppets</a></span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Why are puppets useful in the EFL Classroom? Because they can be used in stories, songs, chants, roleplay and pairwork. They provide motivation even if the students think they are silly.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Puppets are fantastic for meaning, for fluency, for communication, for cross-curricular activities. They are great to teach vocabulary, to teach language and of course, to evaluate.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">My experience with puppets this year has been awesome.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">First of all, I have to thank my dietitian because she sends my lunch very well wrapped in paper bags. As I have tons of those paper bags, I decided to recycle them by creating puppets. I browsed tons of websites to see how I could make them. I pinned them and then I let my creativity run!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The original paper bags - My 1st puppet</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">When I taught "animals" to my 6th graders, I told them they had to make a puppet so as to round up our term. They loved the idea immediately. So I gave them the paper bags and they came with lovely "puppet animals". It was such a success what they did, that I invited the kids' parents to attend a "puppet show" in the classroom. My students had to describe their animal to three different parents. It was an incredible day as both parents and students got surprised with all the English they had learnt in 3 months!!!!</span></div>

</tbody></table>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I also did the same with my secondary students. My 1st year students had to talk about pets so... I told them that they had to create a puppet and I was going to evaluate them with the puppet. The kids did beautiful puppets and the test was oral, of course. Our school principal congratulated them because they could produce tons of vocabulary.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><i><u><span style="font-weight: normal;">Reform Symposium Conference - 2013</span></u></i></span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">It was such a great pleasure having attended the RSCON4 this year! I got there just by chance or better said, because I'm a member of "The 30 Goals Challenge for Educators" group. </span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">There I talked about one of my activities and projects with my dear Ayat Tawel from Egypt - "ArgentEgypt"- and Shelly Sanchez Terrell read it, liked it and invited us to participate in the conference as presenters.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">It was a fantastic event; there were more than 100 presenters, tons of interesting topics and awesome educators from all around the globe.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I attended some sessions due to time difference, working time and sleeping time. They were marvelous as I learnt a lot from all of the presenters. I cannot say "I like this much more than the other one" cause they were all great. What I can say is that I learnt, learnt and learnt!!!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">To my surprise, Ayat nominated me as one of the EdInspired teachers, and much more surprised I was when I was told that I was one of the 5 "winners" so to speak!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I'm happy to have been there, to have listened to outstanding-ovation sessions and to have met excellent educators cause all that has given me more ideas to keep improving, to keep working and to keep saying "I love being an educator".</span></div>
<div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><i><u>Trabajo Final</u></i></span></h3>
<div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;">El que más me gusta es Photopeach. Es una herramienta donde se suben fotos y queda hecha una presentación formal.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Aquí verán el trabajo de mis alumnos de 1ero 2da con sus títeres.</span></div>
<div>

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="296" src="http://photopeach.com/embed/588m5o" width="445"></iframe><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
</span>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Una herramienta similar es Animoto. De igual manera, se suben fotos y se realiza un album.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
</span></div>
<div>
<br />
<a href="http://animoto.com/play/iUpZaJRPXvOhcN8Q1KzdMA" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Caminitos con Historia - Animoto</span></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Otra herramienta que he usado es Fotobabble. Se sube una fotografía, se graba un mensaje y luego se escucha dicho mensaje.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><object height="350" width="400"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.fotobabble.com/mediafiles/templates/basicslideshow/fb.swf"></param>

<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Como parte de las actividades del Módulo 3, teníamos que leer el material obligatorio y crear cuentas en algunos sitios que se mencionan en la bibliografía obligatoria.</span></div>

<a href="http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?present=true&id=442965" target="_blank">#30 Goals - Goal # 13</a></h3>
<br />
I<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">t's been such a long time since the last time I wrote my last post. However, being part of the 30 Goals Challenge for Educators have made me review my blog.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Today, I just want to talk about Goal #13 "Make a Global Connection". I really loved this goal as I made one important connection not only for my professional career but also for my personal life. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">My first global connection was when I did my 1st EVO (Electronic Village Online) session some years ago. I met wonderful teachers from around the planet who helped me in my classes and shared tons of incredible ideas. After finishing "Becoming a Webhead", my entire world had changed! My mind was opened, my knowledge about technology had broadened and my life had a new friend and colleague: Miss Ayat Tawel from Egypt. We both became good friends and started sharing ideas and projects related to our students.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We both decided our students could interview us just by asking different kinds of questions. We were so enthusiastic that the interviews were a complete success. I have to thank Skype for this! Such a new tool for us... Our students were amazing not only with the questions but also with the interviews! My students even danced for Ayat when they interviewed her.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">After these online sessions, we decided to create a Facebook group for the kids. They had to strengthen what they had started, they had to post in English and they had to share posts about their culture, their customs and anything they liked and loved. Our group was called "ArgentEgypt". It was such a great success that both Ayat and I didn't imagine it. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="http://es.slideshare.net/Pescada/learning-together-2013-16474111" target="_blank">ArgentEgypt</a></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Now, after 2 years, that experience is leading me to another "huge" global connection. As member of Rotary International, I have become part of the #ROSNF (Rotary on Social Network Fellowship) group. There are Rotarians from around the world ready to serve their communities and ready to keep social networks as part of the service Rotary International provides.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A group of Rotarians from Mauritius Island, Madagascar, Canada, the Caribbean and I from Argentina are in the process to create a project where all our students get connected. Lots of ideas are on the table (virtual, by the way) waiting to be fulfilled and ready to become true.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I strongly believe in "Global Connections"; I strongly believe that even if we have different languages, different culture and different customs, people get connected "with just a click"! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

They appeared on my e-mail address and I just followed the link. I never imagined how they would change my life not only as a person but also as a teacher.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">My 1<span style="font-size: x-small;">st</span> EVO sessions were very complicated as it was too much work, too much time online and I couldn’t follow the pace. I did have to quit one of the two sessions and kept on participating in one. However, I kept the “online relation” with certain “online people”, namely Jennifer Verschoor, Sandra Rogers and Vance Stevens. That same year, in February, I attended a 3-days conference in Córdoba City (</span><a href="http://www.pro-t.com.ar/"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Calibri;">http://www.pro-t.com.ar/</span></a><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> ) and I happened to meet Jennifer for the 1<span style="font-size: x-small;">st</span> time. We became dear colleagues and since then, we have shared some webinars and even a 4-days conference (LABCI Conference) in Asuncion, Paraguay. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div><br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">In 2011, Jennifer asked me if I was going to participate in EVO, and I said “Yes, of course” and she suggested joining “Becoming a Webhead” and that’s what I did. Thank you Jennifer for such great suggestion!<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">At the very beginning I felt completely lost… blogs, wikis, and audio tools… jees… all together for a complete newbie. But… wonderful names appeared “Teresa, Jose, Fernanda, Dafne, Mbarek”… just to name a few. They provided fantastic help and taught me all I know about web 2.0 tools. We had an outstanding session and at the very end, when I did my final reflections, I met my dear sister, friend and colleague (in that order) Ayat Tawel from Egypt. We shared the same ideas, the same fears and the same willingness to work, to put forward all we had learnt.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Ayat and I did a fantastic job with Skype and Facebook. Our students interviewed us via Skype and after those 4 sessions, we created a Facebook group called ArgentEgypt. The main aim was for students to get to know other culture via English. The project as a success as Vance Stevens invited Ayat and I to give a presentation at Elluminate </span></span><a href="http://learning2gether.posterous.com/ayat-al-tawel-and-maria-bossa-discuss-their-s"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Calibri;">http://learning2gether.posterous.com/ayat-al-tawel-and-maria-bossa-discuss-their-s</span></span></a><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><o:p></o:p></span></div><br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Later in 2011, on my BIRTHDAY, I got a mail from our dear Teresa (one of the coordinators) inviting me to be part of the BaW2012 team. Of course… I accepted immediately. The rest is private as you one day might be part of it.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Why this entire introduction? Because I think that being part of <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>EVO / BaW is like being part of “The Tribe” as Sir Ken Robinson explains in his book “The Element: How Finding your Passion Changes Everything”. In the book he says that “tribe members can be collaborators or competitors. They can share the same vision or have utterly different ones. They can be of a similar age or from different generations. What connects a tribe is a common commitment on the thing they feel born to do”. (p 105)<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">During my short summer holidays in the house I have in front of a lake, I discovered that being part of EVO and BaW is like a parrot’s nest. Why?<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Because EVO is like a tree. All the sessions, in this case BaW, are like parrots’ nests and all the members in each session are the parrots. They all belong to “The Tribe” which is in “The Zone”, i.e. being here and now doing what you like so as to find “The Element”.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">EVO and Becoming a Webhead have opened the doors to a lot of doors in my professional career as I have been able to put into practice thousands of ideas and tools in my classes. They have also opened my mind in the sense of sharing, asking, answering, learning and teaching thousands of things. Last but not least, they have given me the chance to meet wonderful people and become part of my life.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">I have created an Animoto video with pictures about the nests. I cannot include any picture of the EVO / BaW sessions because that would mean a lot of work as a lot of people are included but I guess each member (or parrot) knows that s/he is part of it.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><br />

Why don't we give it a try and go back in time?<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;">I</span></o:p></span><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">n the introduction of the paper “Motivation in EFL Classes: Who does it depend on?” Mady Casco mentions the episode “Bart gets and F” from <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Simpsons TV Series</i>. I’ve found it very interesting because it led me to the book “The Element, How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything”, by Ken Robinson with Lou Aronica (book introduced to me by a dear colleague Federico Bertón, from San Luis, Argentina).<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Mady explains perfectly well how Matt Groening and Michael Stern show the connection between teachers’ expectations and those of their learners and vice versa. In “The Element”, Ken Robinson interviews Matt so as to exemplify how people can find their “element”.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">I’ll quote Mat and Ken (p.4) “Matt always did fine in school, getting decent grades and passing all of the important tests. However, he found himself tremendously bored. In order to keep himself amused, he started drawing during classes. “I would draw constantly”, he told me. “And I got so good at drawing that I was able to draw without looking, so that the teacher would think that I was paying attention”. The story goes on and it’s a bit long to keep writing but what I want to point out is the following.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Maybe Matt (and Michael) did that episode on purpose, to show how he felt when he was at school. He wasn’t given the chance to do what he felt during the class. Teachers tried to motivate Matt but he found no way to keep his eyes and mind focused. And this leads me to what Gardner has tried to depict with his Theory of Multiple Intelligences plus the Neurolinguistic Programming Learning Theory of the 3 learning channels.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">On January 24<span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span>, 2012, Nick Peachey gave an outstanding online session on how to motivate teens called<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>“Technology with Teens: Developing material and practices for the digital generation” (</span><a href="https://connectpro10829081.adobeconnect.com/_a875541554/p2uh6ilq2b7/?launcher=false&fcsContent=true&pbMode=normal"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Calibri;">https://connectpro10829081.adobeconnect.com/_a875541554/p2uh6ilq2b7/?launcher=false&fcsContent=true&pbMode=normal</span></a><span style="font-family: Calibri;">, for the YLTsig EVO sessions 2012) and he showed us great web 2.0 tools as means of motivation for students. Yes, I loved all the sites and I will use them but why do we (teachers) have to keep on providing students more online tools instead of coming back to old games? Teachers and parents complain a lot about kids and teens being in front of the PCs for a long time and wasting their time playing negative games, chatting, watching videos and films so… why (again) can’t we teachers go back to traditional games such as “Peggy goes”, “SuperClue”, “Chinese Whispers” and so on.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">I can understand that we are in the 21<span style="font-size: x-small;">st</span> century and we are in the era of “digital natives” but kids and teens are losing the basics, the way we (adults) used to play, used to learn and used to entertain. They don’t know what a “cassette” is, they don’t know how to live without internet, and they don’t know how to look for information in a library… With just a “click” they have all!<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Where is creativity in them? You might probably say… “Web 2.0 tools like Photopeach, Animoto, Voxopop… etc” and I would agree with you 100%. But I also wonder where the “traditional” creativity is. The one students use to write compositions, the one students use to speak in front of a class, the one students use to work… That one, I guess, is absent.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">We, teachers, need to motivate students as much as we can through different methods, even if we have to become clowns. With too many media interference, students find it difficult to concentrate, to keep attention and we, again teachers, put a lot of emphasis in trying to bring them back… <em>What if we move to their world for at least once and see what happens? Maybe we can discover a new way of seeing, feeling and teaching things.<o:p></o:p></em></span></span></div><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;"><br />

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Two years ago when I did my 1st EVO, I enrolled in Multiliteracies where Vance and some other people were the coordinators. I thought it was an easy group but then I realized it was a bit difficult and had to drop as they had been discussing topics for a long time before that EVO session.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">But before quitting that session (I was doing another one for kids) I happened to attend an online session by Mark Pegrum who also invited us to read his book “From Blogs and Bombs: The Future of Digital Technologies in Education”. During that session, he presented us with the following text: </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;"><em><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">“My smmer hols wr CWOT. We had to “guess” what she meant and that was it as we were supposed to do some other reading and comments. <br />
Later on, a dear friend, colleague and EVO moderator for some time, Jennifer Verschoor, also gave us a text with a question “What about introducing Shakespeare” via text message. So, she wrote some acts from Romeo and Juliet in acronyms. We had a wonderful time trying to decipher what these two characters were saying. I decided to go far beyond that (as I usually do with all I find) and put many other classic stories into text message so my students could work with them.</span></span><br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"></span></span><br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">My students did it great because they knew most of the stories and worked with acronyms beforehand. (By the way, Mangas related to Shakespeare can also be found so… plenty of material to work with him.)</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">We also worked with the following video </span></span><br />
<br />
<object style="height: 250px; width: 200px;"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ySR3hpieiQc?version=3&feature=player_detailpage"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ySR3hpieiQc?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="300" height="250"></object><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span lang="EN-US">and they had to not only guess what the people were saying but also the impact of text messages in our society, especially teens.</span></span></span><br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"></span></span><br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Why all this? Because I think we can do wonders with Twitter as Graham and most of the others suggested. We can tell our students create cartoon characters and interact between them. An Argentinian colleague made a History project in Facebook where his students were different personalities from our past.
